CUPE Going after Ontario Liberal Health Care Plan

The CUPE union continues to go after the Ontario government regarding health care, long-term care, and in conjunction, the use of funding and personal support workers. On January 18th, they issued a press release titled: “What have Ontario seniors done to earn the wrath of the Ontario government?

The money quote from the article is:

“Platitudes from the health minister and a couple of hours a week of home care aren’t going to provide a senior with multiple chronic conditions and little mobility with the 24-hour care and the quality of life they deserve,”

It’s refreshing to see a major union, and a voice for personal support worker employees within Ontario, go after the Liberal government.p>

CUPE opted out of the PSW Registry steering committee back in August of 2012. CUPE shared the following quote regarding the Registry (via Diablogue.org):

…a dollar-store form of regulation, which benefits the province at the expense of the rights and dignity of personal support workers.

The PSW Registry is headed by the OCSA (Ontario Community Support Association). Lori Holloway, is the Chief Operating Officer of the OSCA, as well as the founding director of the PSNO (Personal Support Network of Ontario). Lori Holloway was also the Liberal Candidate in the Dufferin riding during the 2011 election.

Keep in mind, the Registry handed over the keys to the OSCA to add a layer of independence. But it’s not hard to connect the dots, is it?

Back to the article at hand, the CUPE press release goes on to chastise the Liberal Government over health care spending, the lack of care, and the proposed co-payment plan for affluent seniors.
