PSW Media Round-up: Early March 2012

PSW Media Round-up: Early March 2012

Outside of the Drummond Report, the news media has been pretty quiet about the personal support worker industry of late. Here are the most interesting news pieces of the past few weeks.

Onto the articles:

PSWs push for more time (Peterborough this Week)

An article highlighting CUPE’s ongoing fight for a 3.5 hour standard of care (per resident) within Ontario long-term care homes. CUPE has been after the 3.5 standard for a number of years but they are now really turning up the heat, making numerous media appearances throughout the province.

Ontario Man Arrested, Pictures of Drawn Gun (Windsor Star)

The above story has been featured by the media throughout Canada and even in the United States. The story itself is rather interesting and should be read. An odd positive by-product for the PSW industry came about from this story, as most media outlets used the mans profession (he is a PSW) as a positive example.

Laid off call entree workers look for jobs in lean times (Owen Sound Sun Times)

Another job market related article. A call centre in Owen Sound closed, taking down 133 employees. One of the articles main subjects has their PSW degree and will fall back onto it after the call centre closing. The article goes into the standard job seeker/retraining subjects.

We’ll be back in a few weeks for another media roundup blog post.
